Core Web Vitals Explained: LCP, CLS, and INP for Non-Engineers

Most CEOs can't explain why their site is slow. This post closes that gap — and ties each metric to revenue.

Your site might be losing customers before they read a single word. Core Web Vitals are Google’s way of measuring the actual experience of loading and using a page — and they’re a confirmed ranking factor. If your scores are poor, you’re paying a tax in both rankings and conversions. The good news: once you understand what LCP, CLS, and INP actually measure, knowing where to focus becomes obvious.

LCP: Are You Making People Wait?

Largest Contentful Paint measures how long it takes for the largest visible element on the page to load. That’s usually a hero image, a large heading, or a above-the-fold block of text. Google’s threshold: under 2.5 seconds is good, over 4 seconds is poor.

LCP is the most directly tied to bounce rate. Research from Google consistently shows that as LCP time increases, the probability of a user leaving before engaging increases sharply. For a SaaS pricing page or a landing page running paid traffic, a 3-second LCP vs a 1.5-second LCP can be the difference between a 3% and 5% conversion rate. That math compounds fast.

The most common LCP culprits: unoptimized hero images, render-blocking JavaScript that delays when the page starts painting, and slow server response times (TTFB).

CLS: Is Your Page Jumping Around?

Cumulative Layout Shift measures visual instability — how much the page layout moves around as it loads. If you’ve ever tried to click a button and had an ad load above it, sending your finger to the wrong place, you’ve experienced high CLS. Google’s good threshold is under 0.1.

CLS doesn’t feel like a performance problem to most teams because the page might technically load fast. But it destroys user trust. Ahrefs found that layout shifts frequently occur on pages with late-loading images without defined dimensions, dynamically injected banners, and web fonts that swap in after the page renders.

The fix is usually simpler than it sounds: define explicit width and height on images, reserve space for ad units, and use font-display: optional or preload your critical fonts.

INP: Is Your Page Actually Responsive?

Interaction to Next Paint is the newest Core Web Vital, replacing First Input Delay in 2024. It measures how quickly your page responds to any interaction — clicks, taps, keyboard input. Good is under 200ms. Poor is over 500ms.

INP catches something LCP and CLS miss: a page can load fast and look stable but still feel sluggish because heavy JavaScript is blocking the main thread. This is especially common on SaaS marketing sites that load analytics, chat widgets, A/B testing scripts, and retargeting pixels all at once. Under 200ms feels instant. Over 500ms feels broken.

A Quick Self-Audit Checklist

You can get your current scores in under two minutes:

  1. Go to PageSpeed Insights and enter your homepage and your highest-traffic landing page
  2. Look at the Field Data section first (real user data, what Google uses for rankings) — not just Lab Data
  3. Note which of the three metrics is failing
  4. Check the Opportunities section for the specific fixes Google recommends

Run this for your five most important pages. The results will tell you exactly which metric to prioritize and usually identify the specific resources causing the problem.

Core Web Vitals aren’t a box-checking exercise — they’re a proxy for whether your site is actually pleasant to use. Fix them, and you improve both your rankings and your conversion rate at the same time.
